Pre War

Charles William Woodcock was born on 13 October 1897 in St Pancras, London, the son of William and Harriet Woodcock (nee Clements), and was baptised on 1 August 1897 in Reed, Hertfordshire (where his father was born).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 29 Needington Road, St Pancras, London, where his father was working as a navvy.


His father died on 2 January 1907, aged 40. and his mother re-married to Samuel Barnes later the same year. On the 1911 Census Charles was living with his stepfather, mother and sister Winifred at High Street, Barkway, Royston, Herts. His stepfather died in 1914, aged 48.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Barkway, Herts, initially serving with the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 5237, later transferring to the 1st/6th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, under reg. no. 6772.


Charles was killed in action on 6 November 1916 and is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.

Additional Information

His mother, Harriet Barnes, received a war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £2 9s 2d. She also received a pension of 6 shillings a week and later lived at Icknield Way, Baldock, Herts and 22 Shott Lane, Letchworth, Herts.
