Pre War

John Albert Darvell was born in Tring in 1895 to Joseph Darvell, shoemaker, and Ruth (nee Warren).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, John and William (born 1900 were living at 47, Alma Road, Wandsworth, London Surrey.


On the 1911 Census John was employed as a type founder and was living with his parents, William and Frank (born 1903) at 17. Dingwall Road, Wandsworth.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for John, who was enlisted in the London Regiment as Rifleman 4930 (renumbered as 322182 in 1917 in the Territorials renumbering scheme) in 2/6th (City of London)Battalion (Rifles) sometime in 1916.


He went to France with his Battalion on 26 Jan 1917, landing at le Havre. The Battalion were a Territorial Unit and were part of 174 Brigade, 58 (2/1st London) Division, also fully a Territorial Force. In 1917 they took part in the Pursuit to the Hindenberg line (17-29 Mar), Bullecourt (4-17 May), Actions on the Hindenberg Line (20 May- 16 Jun). It was in this last action that John was reported Missing and he death to have occurred on 21 May 1917. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £7 10s and arrears of £3 16s 2 d was paid to hid father.
