Born on 14 Feb 1876 in Clapham, Bedfordshire son of Samuel and Ellen Woods, of Mansdale Cottage, Redbourn, Herts. and baptised on 30 Apr 1876 in Clapham.


He was living in Redbourn in 1881 and 1891. Enlisted on 25 May 1894 in Bedfordshire Regiment 4th Bn. at Berkhamsted, appointed L. Cpl. on 12 Oct 1895, Cpl. on 23 Mar 1897. Served in S Africa Dec 1899 Sep 1902. Promoted to Sergeant on 18 Apr 1901. Discharged on completion of 12 years service on 24 May 1906.

Wartime Service

Presumably re-enlisted at the outbreak of the war into 6th Bn.
