Pre War

Born in 1887 in Redbourn, Herts. son of Charles Woodward.

He married Gertrude (later Mrs Hodgkinson of 61 Holly Rd, Uttoxeter, Staffs) on 4 Feb 1911 and they lived in Church End, Redbourn. He was a horseman on the farm and had three children.

Wartime Service

Served as part of the 118 Brigade, 39 Division.

Enlisted at Hertford on 17 Apr 1915 formerly 4835 Private 1st Hertfordshire Regiment, entered France on 13 Mar 1916 via Southampton to Rouen and was invalided back to England on 2 Jul 1916 with bronchitis and pleurisy. He was then posted to France again arriving at Calais via Folkestone on 24 Jul 1917 and was attached to 7th Bedfordshire Regiment. Returned to Hertfordshires on 18 Aug 1917 and was killed in action.
