Caldicott School Memorial, Hitchin*1

He was born in April 1898 the son of Dr. J. A. Hargreaves, of Wetherby House, Wetherby, Yorks., and the late Annie Hargreaves.


He entered Caldicott School in April 1908 and leaving in July 1911. He then went to the Leys at Cambridge.

Wartime Service

James obtained a commission and was killed in action whilst serving with the 126th Royal Field Artillery. This was during the Battle of Poelcappelle in the Ypres Salient in appalling conditions of mud and devastation.


He has no known grave but is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing near Ypres in Belgium.

He may appear as G B on the school memorial. *1 This memorial (names only) was removed to Caldicott School, Farnham Royal, Buckinghamshire, when the school moved to that site.
