Pre War

Son of Charles and Anna/Hannah (nee PHILLIS) HARMER of Cranbrook, Kent.

His parents married 1878 in the Cranbrook district.  Hannah died 1938 in the Cranbrook district aged 81; Charles died 1939 aged 83, and was buried 27 April at St George’s, Benenden, Kent.

Herbert was born 1890 in Benenden, and baptised 31 August 1890 at St George’s, Benenden.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1891 Census, aged 9 months he lived in Benenden, with his parents and one sibling.  On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he still lived in Benenden, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a garden labourer aged 20 he lived in Bearsted, Kent.

Recorded as born in Benenden and was living in Watford when he enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford; was entitled to the Victory and British War Medals, and was killed in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Herbert’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
