Bishop's Stortford Town Memorial

Henry George Woolger was born on 20 April 1892 in Bishop's Stortford, the eldest son of Horace George and Alice Emily Woolger. He was educated at Hockerill School, Bishop's Stortford.


On the 1911 Census he was said to be a visitor at the home of his grandmother Emily Archer at 6 Church Street, Bishop's Stortford and was working as a hairdresser's assistant. His mother and sister Annie were staying there as well.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Shepherd's Bush, Middlesex on 1 February 1915 and served with the 17th Bn, Middlesex Regiment in France from 17 November 1915.


He was killed in action at Delville Wood. The Chaplain wrote "Your son was killed in the post of duty by a German sniper, while the battalion was holding a very dangerous wood, now become famous through the daily papers".

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £1 14s 1d.
