Fred Douglas was born 1896 in Wheathampstead to Frederick George Wootton, a general dealer, and Ann (nee Marshall).


On the 1901 Census Fred was living with his parents, sister Ellen born 1892) at the ironmongers shop at 1 Church Street, Wheathampstead. On the 1911 Census Fred, was peobably helping in the shop, was living with his parents and younger brother John Ellis. His mothe later lived at 22, Chester Road, Highgate NW19, London.

Wartime Service

Fred volunteered in 1914 as Gunner 93896 in the Royal Field Artillery. He was posted to 18 Division Ammunition Column. No Service Record was found for Fred.


18 (Eastern) Division had been formed in Sep 14 and initially concentrated its Units in the Colchester Area. Fred died on 18 May 1915 in Colchester and was buried on 22 Sep 1915 in St Helen’s Churchyard, Wheathampstead.

Additional Information

War Gratuity £3 and arrears of £7 13s 6d was paid to his father.
