Biography

Leslie Henry Worssam born 1885 was the eldest son of Henry John Worssam and Caroline Southernwood. He had 1 brother and 2 sisters. His father was Chairman of G J Worssam, an Engineering company.

Leslie was educated at Aldenham School (1897 – 1902) and after leaving was apprenticed to his father‘s company, where he progressed to the Drawing Office, Design and Estimating Duties. Also during this time he became a Graduate member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

He enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company as Private 1915 in 1st Battalion on 5 Sep 1914 and was with the B.E.F. on 29 Dec 1914, wounded 16 Jun 1915 he rejoined the Battalion 10 Aug 1915 and was Killed in Action 8 Feb 1917.

Lt Col CF Osborne wrote “The death of your gallant son has caused universal regret to all in our battalion. The fact that he was killed instantly by a shell in the performance of a most arduous but essential duty must be your comfort. He did not suffer at all. The battalion has been engaged in very difficult and important operations lately, and all ranks had to exert their maximum efforts to accomplish our varied tasks. I am glad and proud to say that they never failed to do what was asked. Your son was one of those who made possible for us to succeed. We in the battalion shall always keep him in grateful memory.”
