Pre War

Richard George Harradine (known as Dick) was born on 14 May 1894 in Ickleford, Herts, the son of Alfred and Louisa Harradine and baptised on 17 July 1894 at St Katherine's Church, Ickleford.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Charlton,  where his father was a carpenter.

He was said to be living in Meadow Way, Letchworth at the time of enlistment.

(His mother's address on pension records was 17 Union Road, Hitchin, Herts and later lived at 12 Salisbury Avenue, Stanford le Hope, Essex).

Wartime Service

Dick was probably a member of the Hertfordshire Yeomanry (which became a territorial force in 1908), prior to the outbreak of war. He enlisted in Hertford and served as Private 1763.  He was sent to Egypt and served from 6 November 1914. The following year they moved to Gallipoli where he was wounded in action and died at sea on 27/28 August 1915, aged 21, from his wounds (probably on a Hospital Ship). (N.B. records differ as to which day).

He would have been buried at sea and thus has no known grave. His name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.

Additional Information

His pay owing was divided between mother Louisa, brother Bertie and sister Rosie and a war gratuity of £3 was divided between his mother Louisa and sister in law Eliza Annie. (date of death given as 27.8.1915 on Register of Soldiers Effects).

Pension records exist but give no indication of the amount of pension received, if any.
