Pre War

Horace joined the Beds Regiment in September 1914, on the same day as his brother Edgar. They went through their training together.

Another brother, Walter, joined the Staffords R.F.A. in May 1915.

Wartime Service

Horace went out to France in July 1915, still together with Edgar.  He went missing in action on the 27th of September 1916.  His mother later received a letter from an officer to say the he was killed on that day: "It was on the 27th that our battalion won its famous success, and it was a glorious death that your son died.  He was a general favourite with all. Please accept my deepest sympathy."

Horace was 28 at the time of his death.

Additional Information

An article in the Hertfordshire Express (date unrecorded) mentions that Mrs Harris is widowed and living at Flint Cottage, Flamstead. It mentions the loss of two of her sons in action, with Walter serving with the Expeditionary Force in France.
