Pre War

George was the son of John and Emily Wren, later of 4 Pretoria Cottages, North Mimms, Hatfield. George was born in 1880 in North Mimms, and christened 30th January 1881.

In the 1881 census George was just 4 months old and the family were living at Marshmore Farm, North Mimms where John was an agricultural labourer. The family consisted of parents: John (24), Emily (20) and children: William (2) and George. By 1891 they were living at Huggens Lane, North Mimms. His father was now listed as a general labourer. Two more children were now present Ada (5) and Edith (2). They were still there in 1901 bit more children had been added to the family: Daisy (9), Clara (7), Arthur (5), Alfred (2) and Ernest (4-months). George was now working as a general labourer

By the 1911 census George was living at Pretoria Cottages, North Mimms, with his Grandmother, Ann Munt, and working as a bricklayer’s labourer.

Officially recorded as born in Hatfield and was living in Welham Green when he enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

George was formerly in the Herts Regiment as service number 5709 before being transferred to the 6th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire Regiment) as Private 36504.

He was killed in action.

Awarded the British War Medal & Victory Medal.

Additional Information

After his death the money owed £4 12s 4d and the War Gratuity of £% was sent to his father.


A Rhoda Emily Wren in mentioned on George’s pension card as his mother and claimant but she was deceased.
