Pre War

Harry James Wright was born in Foxearth, Essex, in 1894, son of Harry Wright, a Thatcher, and Emma Wright, (nee Honeywood). One of five children, Florence (B 1892), George (B 1896), Stanley (B 1899) and Francis (B 1901).

1901 Census records Harry aged 7, living with his parents and four siblings in Belchamp St Paul, Essex.

1911 Census records Harry aged 17, employed as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, and three siblings in Belchamp St Paul, Clare, Suffolk.

Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Harry moves to Bushey in Hertfordshire, as his service record gives his home address as 92 Pinner Road, Bushey, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Harry enlisted on 12th November 1914, at Pound Lane, Willesden Green, London, for four years’ service in the 9th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, T. F. with the service number TF/2693. He was aged 21, and gave his address as 92 Pinner Road, Bushey, Herts. He served at home until July 1915, when he embarked with the M.E.F. for Gallipoli, aboard H.M. T.S. Huntsgreen, Departing from Devonport on 18th July 1915. Harry died of Dysentery aboard H.M. H.S. Valdivia on 6th September 1915.

He is in the CWGC East Mudros Cemetery, in Greece. Grave Ref: II. L. 213. He is commemorated at St Matthews Church, Oxhey.

All four brothers served their country in the Army, his three brothers all survived the war.

His mother was awarded a Dependents Pension of 7/6 a week. The value of his effects were £2-10s-2d, Pay Owing and £3, War Gratuity which went to his mother Emma.
