Pre War

Isaac John Wright (known as John) was born on 6 May 1876 in South Creake, Fakenham, Norfolk, the son of Henry and Susan Wright.  On the 1881 Census the family were living at Church End, South Creake, Norfolk where his father was working as an agricultural labourer.

He was living with his wife Ellen and two children on the 1901 Census at 14 Montague Terrace, Sutton, Surrey, and working as a Gas Stoker. On enlistment in 1914 he gave his age as 38 and his occupation as engine driver.

His widow gave her address as 44 Stayton Road, Sutton Surrey on pension records. but later lived at 18 Cherry Bounce, Hemel Hempstead.

Wartime Service

John initially enlisted on 29 August 1914 at Sutton, Surrey (reg. no. 46088) to serve with the Royal Garrison Artillery, under the name of Isaac John Wright, but was discharged on 16 September as unfit and diagnosed with Brights Disease (kidneys). It seems, however, that he recovered and re-enlisted in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey on 27 October 1914. He had been in the National Reserve and had served in the Garrison Artillery.

He served with the 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment in France from 24 March 1915 and fought in the 2nd Battle of Ypres and the Capture of Hill 60.
