Pre War

Edwin was born on 17 June 1861 in Lewisham, London, the son of Hugh Stott MD and Janette Stott, and baptised on 14 July 1861 at St Mary's, Lewisham. The family were then living at Sandwell Place, Lewisham and his father's occupation is given as Surgeon. 


His father died in 1869 and on the 1871 Census he was living with his widowed mother, brother George and sister Olive at 23 St Stephens Road, Lee, Kent where his mother was living on 'income from interest'.  A servant was living with them.  His mother died in September 1871, aged 42. 


Edwin obtained his Master's Certificate on 5 July 1889


He married Azila Marianne Smith on 13 June 1893 at St Mary (Minster) in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. They had a daughter also called Azila born in 1896 and a son Robert Edwin Hugh born in 1898, both in Berkhamsted. 


His wife and children were listed in 1901 and 1911 at 5 Boxwell Road, Berkhamsted, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Edwin served as Master of the SS Conch Mercantile Marine which was a London registered armed  bulk petroleum tanker.  It was travelling from Calcutta and Rangoon, heading for the River Thames laden with benzine when it was torpedoed by UB23 and sank off Anvil Point south of Poole, Dorset. Twenty eight lives were lost.


He died at sea on 7 December 1916.  He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. 

Additional Information

His widow was granted probate of his estate on 9 March 1917 with effects of £2004 17s 2d. She died in 1940.
