He enlisted at Handel Street, London, and was posted to the 1st/2nd (City of London) Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action. Unfortunately, Bertram’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Bertram in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 20 April 1918; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 29 March 1919.
Son of Harriett (formerly YORK, nee BOSWELL) CUTLER of Watford, and the late George YORK.
His parents married 2 April 1892 at St Peter’s, Bushey Heath, Herts. George died 1900 in the Watford district aged 34. Harriet remarried 25 January 1908 at St Mary’s, Watford, to James John CUTLER. Harriet died 1938 in Watford aged 69; and was buried 23 February in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; John died 1955 in Watford aged 84, and was buried 10 November, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Bertram was born 1892 in Bushey Heath, and baptised 9 July 1893 at St Nicholas’, Elstree, Herts. He resided in Bushey.
On the 1901 Census, a scholar aged 9 he lived in Chesterton, Cambs. On the 1911 Census, an errand boy aged 18, he lived in Watford, with his mother, step-father and three siblings.
