Pre War

Bernard William Hayden was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire on the 17th January 1897, son of William Charles Hayden a, Nurseryman and Lois Hayden (nee Tew). The eldest of three children.


His parents were married at St. Andrews Church, Enfield, Middx, on the 27th May 1894.


Bernard was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Waltham Cross, Herts, on the 7th February 1897.


1901 Census record Bernard aged 4, living with his parents, sisters Ellen (2), and Lois (4 months) at, The Lodge, Park Lane, Waltham Cross, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census the family are now living at No. 10, Park Lane, and they have two Boarders.

Wartime Service

Bernard enlisted at Ponders End, Middx, posted to the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number L/15026.


On completion of his training Bernard was sent to France arrived on the 27th December 1914, seeing action on the Western Front.


In April 1917, Bernard sailed from Marseille, France, for Alexandria, Egypt, aboard HMT “Cameronia” carrying 2650 Troops as reinforcement for Mesopotamia plus her crew. In the late afternoon of the 15th April 1917, HMT “Cameronia” was 150 Nautical Miles East of Malta when she was hit by a Torpedo from the German Submarine U-33 under the Command of Gustav SieB and sank within 40 minutes with the loss of 210 lives, Bernard being one of them, aged 20. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the CWGC Chatby Memorial, in Alexandria, Egypt, to the missing. 

Additional Information

His parents received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from June 1919.
