Cecil Louden Hayes was born on 28th January 1897 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to parents William Montague Hayes and Catherine Stewart (nee Frew). 


He had an elder Brother and an elder Sister. Cecil attended Haileybury College 1912 – 1914.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in London and joined the 14th Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish) as Private 4199, later changed to Private 510942.  The 14th Battalion trained at Abbots Langley before embarking for France in September 1914.  They saw their first action at Messines in October of that year. 


Cecil appears to have joined his unit in France on 17 Jul 1916 until 13 Sep 1916 when he was wounded (Wound Stripe dated 29 Sep 1916). He returned to the Battalion on recovery (17 Jul 1918).  The Battalion was due to take part in the battle for the village of Boiry on 28th August 1918 and in the build up to the attack Cecil was killed.


His Mother received his monetary effects of £23 5s which included a War Gratuity of £17.

Additional Information

His Brother Montague Stewart Hayes (also born in Vancouver, Canada) was commissioned in Royal Field Artillery, he was awarded the Military Cross (14 Nov 1916) while acting as Forward Observation Officer and reached the rank of Major, and survived until 1978.
