George  William Strange was born in 1895 in Anstey, Hertfordshire, the son of Henry and Martha Strange (nee Smith). He was one of four children, but two had died in infancy.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Puttocks End, Anstey, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1911 he was living in Cheapside, Anstey, with his parents and sister Bertha, and working as a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Royston, Herts and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 8th Battalion in France from 30 August 1915. He would have fought in the Battle of Loos in September and at some point he was promoted to Lance Corporal. 


George died of wounds on 14 April 1917 and is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His mother and father jointly shared the war gratuity of £12 and the pay owing of £10 6s 8d. A pension card exists with his mother as dependant but no amount of pension is recorded.
