Born on 24 Sep 1891 in Watton at Stone, Herts. son of Richard John and Agnes Rachel (Carter) Hayes and christened on 20 Dec 1891. He lived in Shenley, Herts in 1901. He was living and working as a domestic servant in Buckingham Palace Gardens, London in 1911. He married Lily Rogers of 40, Thornton St., The Folly, Hertford, Herts. on 9 Mar 1915 in Wandsworth, London and had one daughter.

Wartime Service

Enlisted on 26 Jan 1915 in London. He embarked for France on 17 Nov 1915.
