Lawrence Ambrose Hayter was born in 1893 in Upper Holloway, Middx. To Ambrose William Hayter, organ builder, and Edith Rose (nee Cross).
On the 1901 Census Lawrence was living with his mother at Brand Gardens, St Pancras, London and in the 1911 Census Lawrence (draughtsman at printers) was living at Sweet Briars, Pixmore Way, Letchworth with his mother and father.
A sister Celia Rose was born Jan 1897 but died in Feb 1897.
Lawrence was known as a talented artist and was engaged to Gladys Cawston, a musician.
Wartime Service
Originally a Conscientious objector, but changed his mind. No Service record was found for him, and was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 32129 he went to France joining the 6th (Service) Battalion as part of 112 Brigade 37 Division. The Division served on the Somme in 1916 (Ancre Nov1916) and in 1917 at Arras and 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele). He was buried by a shell in the summer of 1917 and for a time presumed dead.
Unfortunately later in 1917 at Hollebeke, Ypres he was killed in action during 'Slight Shelling' of the trenches on 30 Dec 1917.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £6 10s and arrears of £6 5s 7d was paid to his father.
