Pre War

George Thomas Stratton was born in Tring in 1880 to George Stratton, farmer, and Charlotte (nee Lepper).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Edith M (born  1879), Mabel E (born 1881), George, Helen M (born 1884), Marjorie (born 1886), Charles G (born 1887), Philip (born 1888), Eleanor (governess born 1871), Lizzie Clark (domestic, born 1867) & Beatrice King (domestic, born 1868) at Manor House, Church Street, Princes Risborough, Bucks.


No record of George was found on 1901 Census.


George married Gertrude Selby on 11 Jun 1905 at St Marks, Shoreditch, London.


On the 1911 Census George and Gertrude were living at 2, Middleton Building. Langham Street, Marylebone, London with their son George James Stratton (born 28 Oct 1905).

Wartime Service

George attested on 15 Jun 1915 and was embodied the same day in the Royal Field Artillery  as Private 2252 (later renumbered as 945840).


He was posted to 2/1st (London) Brigade RFA on 18 Mar 1916 and to 58 Division Artillery Column (as Driver) which was part of 58 (2/1st London) Division and was originally a second line Territorial formation that was deemed liable for foreign service in 1916. George went to France on 26 Jan 1917 with the Division and they were soon in action during the Pursuit to the German Hindenburg Line (17-28 Mar), they moved to the Arras area taking part in the Battle of Bullecourt (4 -17 May) and actions on the Hindenburg Line (20 May-16 Jun). They moved again to take part in the Battles of 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) at the battle of Menin Road (20-25 Sep). Prior to this last action George was killed on 15 Sep 1917.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £10 and arrears of £5 10s 11 d was paid to his widow.
