Pre War

Frederick James Heard was born in 1899 to David and Clara Heard and baptised on 20 October 1889 at St Giles, South Mimms, Barnet. He was one of five of their children to have been baptised there, three on the 20th and two on the 23rd. His father was a publican at The Bull, South Mimms.


On the 1891 Census, the family were living at the Red, White and Blue Beer House in Bishop's Stortford where his father was the beer house keeper and they were still living in Bishop's Stortford in 1901 but had moved to Barrells Down Road.  By the 1911 Census he was living with his brother William and his family at 118 Wellington Road, Hounslow and working as an ironmongery assistant.


He married Doris Courtney in 1916 in West Ham, working as an ironmongery assistant. He married Doris Courtney in 1916 in West Ham. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted at St Paul's Churchyard (probably St Paul's Cathedral) in August 1916 and served with the London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers. He was taken prisoner and died as prisoner of war in Germany.  He also served under service number 8064 in the London Regt.


His body was not recovered for burial and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. 

Additional Information

His executor George Larter, received a war gratuity of £4 and his widow Doris received his pay owing of 12s 4d. Probate was granted on 26 July 1919 to George Larter, electrician.


Effects of £88 11s 11d. Home address given as 3 Higham Street, Higham Hill, Walthamstow and stated that he died in Germany.
