Pre War

William Harry Heffer was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, on the 19th February 1889, son of Walter Heffer a, Carpenter & Joiner and Sarah Heffer (nee Smith). One of six children although one died in infancy.


He was Baptised at Holy Cross & St Lawrence, Waltham Abbey, Essex, on the 4th October 1891.


1891 Census records William aged 2, living with his parents, brothers Walter (3) and Edgar (3 Weeks old) (Edgar died later in the year) in Sydney Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census records William aged 12, at school, living with his parents, brothers Walter (13), Herbert (5) Stanley (2) and sister Jesse (8) at 9 Sydney Road, Cheshunt, Herts. The family had a boarder James Hughes a Metal Turner.


1911 Census records William aged 23, single, working as a General Labourer, living with his parents, and four siblings at 61 Eleanor road, Waltham Cross, Herts, the family had a boarder Leonard Arkell a Chartered Accountant.


William married Florence Emma Miles at Waltham Holy Cross, Essex, on 16th January 1918, they had one daughter Margaret J. Heffer.

Wartime Service

William enlisted and served with the 2nd Water Tank Company M. T., Army Service Corps with the service number M2/188678.


He died in Germany on the 16th February 1919, he is buried in the Cologne Southern Cemetery in Germany.

Additional Information

Florence received a widow’s pension of 13/9 a week and a child’s allowance of 6/8 a week from 25th May 1919, and his effects of £15-13s-04d. At the time Florence was living at 3 Rounton Road, Waltham Abbey, Essex.


Florence remarried on the 12th July 1921 to Martin Henry Potter at the Church of St John the Evangelist, Brixton, London.


His brother Private 6660 Walter Newman Heffer died on the 17th April 1917, of wounds received in action and brother Private 41326 Stanley George Heffer Died on 2nd June 1918 of wounds received in action.
