Pre War
Harold Fred Hewitt was born in 1895 in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, the son of Frederick and Louisa Hewitt. He was one of eleven children, although two had died by 1911.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Lye Green, Bucks, near Berkhamsted where his father was a horseman on a farm. They were listed as living at nearby Ashley Green, on the 1911 Census at which time, 16 year old Harold was working as a packer in a 'woodenware' factory.
His parents later lived at Kings Hill, Berkhamsted, Herts. 
Wartime Service
Harold enlisted in Chesham, Bucks and served with the 2nd Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in France from 29 November 1914.
He was initially listed as missing and later confirmed as having been killed in action on 16 May 1915. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Additional Information
Brother to Robert Hewitt who served with the 9th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment and was killed in action on 14 June 1918.
His father received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £9 2s. His mother Louisa received a pension of 10 shillings a week in respect of Harold and his brother Robert.
