Henry James Hensman was born on 18 May 1899 in Islington to Charles and Julia Hensman and baptised at St Mary, Islington on 14 July 1889. They were living in Islington the 1891 Census and his father was a carpenter & joiner. They had moved to 2 Tovey Place, St Pancras, Kentish Town by 1901. On the 1911 Census he was living with his parents near the Post Office at Little Hallingbury, Essex (Bishops Stortford registration district), and working as a Nursery Man. His parents later lived at 24 Oak Street, Bishop's Stortford but his mother died on 25 November 1921.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London and served in the Norfolk Regiment  from 30 May 1915. The Norfolk Regiment sailed from Devonport on 21 July 1915 and landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 12 August.  They were evacuated from Gallipoli on 4 December 1915 and moved to Mudros (Greece), going on to Alexandria on 17 December.  They remained in Egypt/Palestine until the end of the War. 

Additional Information

His father Charles received a war gratuity of £15 and a pension of 5s 6d a week from 2 July 1918 for life.
