Born on 16 Sep 1896 in Punjab, India son of Major C. Herbert. Educated at Haileybury College 1910-14.

Wartime Service

Enlisted as Midshipman R.N. on 1 Apr 1915 and was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 15 Mar 1917. He must have transferred to the Royal Australian Navy and joined the crew of H.M.A.S. Huon. Huon was part of the 5th British Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean on anti-submarine duties. He died of pneumonic influenza in 11th General Hospital, while his ship was docked in Genoa for repairs after a collision with H.M.A.S. Yarra.
