Charles Edward Hill was born in 1899 in Kimpton, Herts, the son of Harry and Lydia Hill (nee Gowen), and one of twelve children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Hardings Marsh, Ayot St Peter, where his father was working as a ploughman on a farm.  By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to Sandridge, St Albans where his father continued working as a ploughman. Charles Edward then aged 13 was named as Edward and still at school.


His parents later lived at Church Lane, Kimpton, nr Welwyn, Herts.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted in Hitchin and joined the Northamptonshire Regiment, serving with the 6th Battalion. 


He was killed in action on 7 August 1918 when the Battalion were at Morlancourt on the Somme preparing for a major assault on 8 August.


He is buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-le-Sec, Somme, France and is one of 24 soldiers from the 6th Battalion who died died the same day. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £10 0s 1d. He also received a pension of 6 shillings a week.
