Pre War

Charles Henry Hill was born in 1897 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire the son of Joseph and Sarah (Gurney) Hill and one of five children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living in Rattle House Cottages, High Street, Bovingdon in 1901.  They remained there 1911 when he was a schoolboy and his father was employed as a Carter.  His parents later lived at New House Farm, Bovingdon.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted at Bedford and initially joined as Private 45173, Suffolk Regiment, later transferring to the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He was killed in action at Passchendaele, aged 20, and death was presumed on 30 October 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

Records show that his war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £5 11s 7d were not issued. It is believed that his mother received a pension, although the record card shows no amount. Brother of Private Arthur Hill who was killed in action on 14 Feb 1917 and is also commemorated on the Bovingdon memorial.
