Edward Albert Hill was born in Welwyn, Herts, on 1 June 1899 in Welwyn, the eldest son of Edward and Alice Hill (nee Wrenn). He was one of seven children, although one had died by 1911. He was baptised on 6 August 1899 at St Mary's, Welwyn.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Gravel Pits, [Codicote Road], Welwyn, where his father was working as a Gardener's Labourer. The remained there in 1911.

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted in Watford and served in France with the 17th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.


He was killed in action on 1 July 1918 during an attack to retake the high ground of Aveluy Wood on the Somme which had been occupied by the Germans during the German Spring Offensives of 1918. 


He is buried at Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Lancashire Dump), Mesnil-Martinsart, France, along with two others from the Lancashire Fusiliers who died the same day.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £5 16s 3d. A pension card exists but gives no indication of any pension received.
