The Herts Advertsiser reported his death:

"The sad news of the death of Pte. J. Hill, whose home address was 13, Kimberly Rd. Fleetville, St. Albans, and who prior to enlistment was a golf professional at Cunnynhame-hill, has been received. He died in Boulogne Hospital, from wounds received an action, and leaves a widow and two children. Before joining up he was for eight years in the employ of Messes. Nicholson’s Ltd., and had only been in France two months when he was fatally wounded. Whilst at Cunnynhame-hill he taught golf to many well-known residents of St. Albans. He was but 39 years of age, and much sympathy is felt for his widow and widowed mother, who lives in Mussulburgh(sic), Scotland, this being the second son she has lost in the war. Her eldest son, a Sergeant in the Royal Scots, was killed recently in France, and her youngest son has been discharged from the army after being severely wounded. Pte. J. Hill was called up on July 10th, 1916, and went to France on the last day in November."
