Pre War

James Henry (known as Harry) was born in 1891 in Silverdale, Wolstanton, Staffs to Allen Street, a labourer, and Emily (nee Birks). Harry had an elder brother and 2 elder sisters.

On the 1901 Census the Family were living at 6, Colville Street, Fenton, Stoke-upon-Trent and Harry now had a further brother and 2 more sisters. By the 1911 Census Harry was employed as a coal pit youth (aged 19) and was living with the family at 28, Free Trade Street, Hanley, Stoke. Harry married Elizabeth Annie Goldstraw in 1916 in Leek, Staffs., they made a home at 3, School Lane, Leek, Staffs.

Wartime Service

Harry joined the North Staffordshire Regiment as Private 10221, he went to Balkans (Gallipoli) on 2 Jul 1915. As no service Record is available it may be presumed that he served with 7th (Service) Battalion, who were engaged at Cape Helles, Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay before the general evacuation to Egypt in Dec 1915. Later he is noted as being with 1st Battalion which served in France & Flanders.

He died in Barnet War Hospital on 12 April 1917 and is interred in Bells Hill Burial Ground. So he must have been evacuated back to the United Kingdom after illness or wounding.
