Arthur Henry Edward Holgate but was also known as Robert Halliday. He appears as Arthur Henry Edward Holgate on the memorials.

His mother was Rebecca Halliday (born in Bow, London) and he had a sister Florence Halliday. Robert Halliday is given as the father on Florence’s birth certificate, and in the 1901 census Rebecca is listed as married, so it may be presumed that he was Arthur’s father. There is some confusion because Rebecca was using her maiden name (Holgate) when she later married Albert Archer and was listed as ‘spinster’ on the marriage certificate.

So in 1901 Rebecca was living is living with her sister Harriett Dyer (nee Holgate), in Knights Street, Sawbridgeworth and listed as Rebecca Halliday 27, married and with her two children with her  Arthur (3) and Florence (1). Robert Halliday was not present but is given as the father on Florence’s birth certificate.

Rebecca married Albert Archer on 24 October 1905; Albert listed as a bachelor and Rebecca (Holgate)as a spinster and both living at different addresses in Sawbridgeworth

Albert John Archer had been married previously, to Alice and they had six children: Lionel, Percy, Stanley, Sidney, Doris and Ivy and all were baptised on 1st March 1903.

The household is complicated. In 1911 they were living in Hoestock Road, Sawbridgeworth, Albert working as a tailor and employed two people presumably Harry Blyth and Flora Robertson, who were boarding with the family and listed as Tailors assistants. The census confirms they had been married for 7 years and had four children together. The full listing of the household is as follows:

Albert K Archer (head 39), Rebecca (wife 37), Lionel (son 16), Percy (son 15), Robert Halliday (stepson), Stanley (son 14), Sidney (son 13), Florence Halliday (stepdaughter 14). Doris (daughter 11), Ivy (daughter 8), Albert (son 5), John (son 3), Flora (daughter), George (son under 1 month), Harry Blyth (22 boarder)(, Flora Robertson (19 boarder) and Edith Mascall (14 boarder and general domestic servant),

So Albert’s children pre-marriage to Rebecca are Lionel, Percy, Stanley, Sidney, Doris and Ivy – six children. The 1911 census suggests that one other had died,

Rebecca’s children pre-marriage to Albert are Arthur (also known as Robert) and Florence – two children.

Together they had Albert, John, Flora and George – four children
