Pre War

Arthur was born on 14 Jun 1891 in Harpenden to Henry Holland, a carter, and Emma (nee Janes).


On the 1901 Census the family were at East Common, Harpenden. On the 1911 Census the family were at Townsend Lane, Harpenden. Arthur, now working as a wood dealer, had married Florence Venables in 1911 and they later had two sons Denis William (1911) and Arthur Henry (1915).


Arthur later lived in Welham Green, Colney Heath and North Mimms. He was a close friend of Corporal Fitzjohn, who died only a week before him.

Wartime Service

Arthur was enlisted as Private 31143 in the Bedfordshire Regiment in the 4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion.


According to a casualty report he was suffering from Lumbago in Nov 1916 when he had had two year’s service and been in France for 3 months.


He later transferred to 8th Battalion which was present at the Battle of Cambrai (first major use of Tanks). In this action Arthur received wounds from which he died on 21 Nov 1917.

Additional Information

Probate £126 12s 4d was granted to his widow together with War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £5 2s 4d to his widow Florence.
