He was Killed in Action, the CWGC give his date of death as the 16th November 1916. Some documents give the date as the 13th November 1916. The Battalion War Diary for 13th November 1916, (The Battalion in action at the Battle of the Ancre), casualties for that day were, wounded 113, died of wounds 9, killed in action 57, & missing 16. In the evening, all available men were withdrawn down to Hamel. The 14th November, the Battalion moved to the second line (Roberts Trench), until the 16th November, when they were moved back to huts at Englebelmer-Martinsart Road. It is possible Herbert was Killed on the 13th, looking at the information from the battalion war diary.
