Joseph John Holloway was born in Tottenham, Middlesex, on the 13th November 1894, son of John William Holloway a, Stationary Engine Driver and Louisa Ann Holloway (nee Appleman). One of seven children although one died in infancy.


He was Baptised at Emanuel Church, Camberwell, London/Surrey, on the 27th March 1896 with three of his siblings Rosetta, Herbert and George.


1901 Census records Joseph aged 7, living with his parents, and five siblings in, Cadmore Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


His father John William Holloway died on 6th February 1910, aged 55.


1911 Census records Joseph aged 17, employed as a House Boy, living with his widowed mother Louisa, brothers Herbert (19), George (15) and sister lily (12) at, 3 Chertsey Cottages, Cadmore Lane, Cheshunt, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Joseph travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 14792.


July 1915 the 7th Battalion, was stationed at Codford Camp, Wiltshire. Mobilized for War service they left Codford Camp on the 26th July 1915, by train for Folkstone, boarded the S.S. “Onward” for Boulogne, France, arriving late that evening. The Battalion disembarked and marched to Ostronove Rest Camp. The following evening of the 27th July the 7th Battalion left the Rest Camp for Gard Central (Train Station), Boulogne, and entrained for Flesselles, arriving in early hours of the 28th July”.


Joseph saw action on the Western Front. He was with the 7th Battalion on the 1st July 1916 at the Battle of Albert, part of the Battle of the Somme. (1st July 1916 to 17th November 1916).


Joseph was Killed in Action on the 28th September 1916, during the attack on the Schwaben Redoubt, North of the Village of Thiepval. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France to the missing.


The Battalion War Diary Appendices for the 28th September 1918, records Joseph Holloway of “A” Company as one of those Killed that day.

Additional Information

His mother Louisa received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 5th June 1917.


His war gratuity of £8-10s-00d, went to his mother Louisa, his pay owing of £7 was slip between his mother Louise, brothers William and Herbert.
