Pre War

George Robert Howard was the son of Robert and Mary Elizabeth Howard. His parents were recorded on pension cards as living at 29 Suez Road, Mill Road, Cambridge.

At present it has not been possible to locate George on birth or Census records, although he was said to have been living in Baldock at the time of enlistment.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and served with the Hertfordshire Regiment in France from 17 August 1915. His initial regimental number of 3529 suggests he enlisted between September and November 1914. This was later changed in the general re-numbering in 1917 to 266034. At some point he was promoted to Acting Lance Corporal.

He was killed in action on 22 March 1918 during the Battle of St Quentin, but has no known grave. His name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £20 and pay owing of £22 9s 6d. Pension cards exist but do not show if a pension was paid.
