On the 1891 Census the family were living at Copland Villa, Copland Road, Harrow, Middlesex where his father was working as a railway clerk. They had moved to 94 Queen's Road, Camberwell by 1901 at which time Alfred was working as a school teacher. In 1911 they had moved again, this time to 56 Manor Park, Lee, Lewisham, London. Alfred was then employed as a school teacher for the London County Council.
He married Alice Margaret Desborough at St Luke's Church, Camberwell, Surrey on 3 April 1915 and was living at 59 Camden Grove Peckham on enlistment. They had a daughter, Margaret Emma, on 9 May 1917.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Camberwell, Surrey in 13 November 1915 and joined the Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derby Regiment), serving with the 2nd/5th Battalion. He was sent for training to the 59th Division Signal School on 18 October 1917 and re-joined the battalion on 9 November 1917.
