Bushey Town Memorial, St Peter’s Church Memorial, Bushey Heath

Born in Bushey on 8 August 1894 and christened on 10 March 1895, Arthur Harold Hughes was the son of Arthur and Lillian (née Goodyer) Hughes.  His parents were married in Bushey on 18 April 1892.


At the 1901 Census, the family was living at 51 Windmill Lane, Bushey Heath. Arthur was 6 years old and had two younger brothers; 5-year-old Horace and one-year old Cyril.  


At the 1911 Census the family was living at 10 Windmill Lane, Bushey Heath with his parents and three siblings; Horace, Cyril and Lilian. His father was employed as a labourer for the Colne Valley Water Company, Arthur was working as a house boy, Horace as a telegraph messenger and the two younger children were at school.  The ages of the family members are 39 for both Arthur (Snr.) and Lilian and 16, 15, 11 and 5 respectively for the children. Their birthplaces are recorded as Bushey for Arthur (Snr.) and Arthur (Jnr.), Abbots Langley for Lilian and Bushey Heath for the three other children. His parents had also had two more children, but they had died in childhood.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted in Watford as Private 202776 in the Norfolk Regiment. He was killed in action on 20 November 1917, aged 22.


He is remembered with honour on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval in France. He is also commemorated on the Bushey Memorial and on the memorial in St Peter’s Church, Bushey Heath.
