Pre War
John Hughes was born on 29 October 1892, in Kings Langley, Herts, son of George Hughes and Mary Anne Hughes (nee Wild). The youngest of 11 children, 4 died in infancy.
He was Baptised on 26 March 1893, in the Parish Church, Kings Langley, Herts.
1901 Census records John aged 8, living with his parents, three brothers and two sisters in Waterside, Kings Langley, Herts.
1911 Census records John aged 18, working as a Bookbinder, living at home with his parents, two brothers and sister, at Waterside, Kings Langley, Herts.
At the time of his enlistment, he was employed by John Dickinson & Co, at their Apsley Mill.
Wartime Service
John enlisted at Bedford, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 32228.
He was reported missing in action, and his death was officially confirmed on 19 April 1917, aged 22. He has no known grave; and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial to the missing in France.
An enquiry was made to the British Red Cross and Order of St John, regarding him being reported missing in action. The request was dated 20 July 1917.
Additional Information
His mother Mary Ann Hughes was awarded a Dependents Pension of 11/- a week from 15 January 1918. Her address was 3, Waterside, Kings Langley, Herts.
The value of his effects was £3-10s-0d, War Gratuity which went to his father George Hughes.
