Hertford Town Memorial

Born on 28 Sep 1878 in Hertford son of Mary A Hutchings and lived in The Eagle, 40 Bengeo Street, Hertford. Husband of Mabel Hutchings of 100 Warminster Road, Westbury, Wiltshire.

Wartime Service

HMS Invincible was one of the first line of British ships into the Dardanelles to bombard Turkish forts and allow the clearance of mines. She was hit and badly damaged by return fire and turned around. She then hit a mine and had to be beached for temporary repairs. She was able to escape to Malta for repairs. William Hutchings was killed during this action.
