James Whitaker Hunter was the eldest son of James Bernard Hunter and Lydia (nee Whitaker)


After school at Aldenham he became an Engineer. 

Wartime Service

He joined 28th (Artist’s Rifles) London Regiment as a private (1150).


He obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant with 5th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment dated 18 Sep 1914, and was with B.E.F. in France in Oct 1914.
