Pre War

Alexander Hynd was born in South Bersted, Bognor, Sussex, the son of Henry and Alice Hynd and one of four children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living in Bersted Village Street, nr Bognor, Sussex where his father gave his occupation as a Certificated Elementary Schoolmaster.  By 1911 they had moved to Hexton, Herts where his father was a Schoolmaster for Hertfordshire County Council and Alexander was a 12 year old scholar. 


Before enlistment he had become engaged to a Luton girl, Mrs E M Day.  

Wartime Service

Alexander enlisted in Hitchin and served with the 6th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent) Regiment.


A letter to his parents from a hospital sister said that he had been severely wounded in the leg and was given a blood transfusion but passed away in the night of the 2 July 1918 and had suffered no pain. He was 19 years old. 


He is buried in Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, France and is commemorated on the war memorial in St Faith's Church, Hexton. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £5 18s 9d. No pension records found.
