Pre War
George Jackson was born in 1891 in Bygrave, nr Baldock, Hertfordshire, the son of William and Elizabeth Jackson (nee Barwick) of Bygrave, Hertfordshire. He was baptised on 23 October 1892 at St Margaret's Church, Bygrave. He was one of fourteen children, but nine had died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at North Road, Bygrave where his father was working as a carpenter. By 1911 they had moved to 50 Common View, Letchworth at which time, George was working as a bricklayer.
Wartime Service
He was already a serving soldier at the outbreak of war, having been a cavalryman with the 9th Lancers between 1911 and 1912. He transferred to the Royal Engineers in 1913, serving with the 59th Field Company in France from 20 November 1914, initially as a Sapper and later being promoted to Corporal. It is believed he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field on 7 February 1919, the same day as he died, (details unknown).
George died from illness (probably Spanish flu) on 7 February 1919 while on his way home to England, and is buried in Dunkirk Town Cemetery, France.
