Pre War
*1 It is proving difficult to identify this man, however the St Albans Cathedral Diocese have added information. They record him as George Henry Jackson, confirm a connection to Hitchin and records that he served in the London Regiment. This information matches Private 613785, George Henry Jackson, who appears on the Letchworth memorials. He does have a connection to Letchworth and Norton, which are about 5 miles from Hitchin, but we have yet to establish the direct connection to Hitchin which would give us certainty. We will continue research but we think that it is likely that he is the man who is also commemorated in Hitchin and in the St Albans Cathedral Diocese records. For his information see George Henry Jackson under Letchworth.
He was apparently in the 19th London Regiment, but of the six casualties mentioned in ‘Soldiers died’ database none of them could be positively identified as having been born, enlisting or residing in Hitchin.
Likewise it has not been possible to identify him in the Medal Rolls due to the frequency of the name. In the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission there are four casualties with this name, but again none of them could be identified as having any association with Hitchin.
However there is a Private 91031 Harry Jackson who was born in Hitchin, enlisted in Louth and who is not on the Hitchin memorials, perhaps, Harry is this man, and the initial ‘C’ is an error. Harry’s biography is included on this site against Hitchin.
