Meredith Charles Clifton was born Perth, Western Australian. His parents were John Charles Horsey and Rebecca James.  He had been in the UK since around the late 1890's as he Father had died 1899 and was living with his mother, elder sister and younger brother in Tiverton, Devon.


He attended Aldenham School and shortly after leaving he enlisted, 26th October 1914, together with his younger brother Meyrick in the Royal Fusiliers, Meredith in 28th Bn. Artists Rifles while Meyrick joined 1st Sportsmans.

Wartime Service

Meredith applied for and gained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant with 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment on 26th July 1915. 


He died from wounds sustained during his service with the Worcesters on 27th October 1916.

Additional Information

His brother Meyrick Edward Clifton James served in France gaining 14-15 Star, Victory & War medals having been wounded (GSW hand) and invalided 28th Feb 1917. He later used the name Clifton James and as such is more famously known as ‘Monty’s Double‘ during the Second World War.
