Frank Jarman was born in 1888 in Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire, the son of George and Sarah Jarman (nee Haylock).
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Ashwell Station, Steeple Morden (on the borders of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire). His father was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1901 they had moved to London and were living at 40 Halstow Road, Greenwich with his father then working as a gas stoker.
His father died in 1906, aged 47, and on the 1911 Census Frank was living with his widowed mother, brother Harold and uncle Arthur Haylock (his mother's brother) at 25 Halstow Road, East Greenwich, London. His occupation was given as jobbing compositor.
He married Ethel Jessie Thorndike on 26 December 1914 at St Barnabas Church, Rotherhithe, Surrey and they lived at 83 Chilton Street, Rotherhithe.
Wartime Service
Frank initially enlisted in Greenwich, London and joined the East Surrey Regiment, under reg, 5219, later transferring to the Essex Regiment and serving with the 9th Battalion.
He was killed in action at Epehy on 18 September 1918, aged 30, and is buried in Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, Epehy, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £2 19s 7d. She also received a pension of 13s 9d a week, later increased to £1 3s 4d a week.
