Pre War

Frederick William Jeffries was born on 3 Apr 1892 in Arlesey, Bedfordshire to Frederick Jeffries, and Mary Elizabeth (nee  Jackson).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Alfred (born (1885), Albert (born 1887) Ada (born 1887), Minnie (born 1892), Frederick, Alfred J (born 1896) and Eva Eveline (born 1898) were living at New Road, Arlesey, Beds.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Frederick (a kitchen boy), Alfred J (eye glass cleaner), Eva Eveline James William (born 1902) were living at High Street, Arlesey, Beds.


His parents later lived at 11, Shott Lane, Letchworth, Herts., having moved there in 1917.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Frederick. He enlisted as a Territorial Soldier in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 4622 in 1914 probably in the 5th Battalione remained with the Bedfordshires, reported as being an officer's servant to Lieutenant Waterton, Captain Smith and others during this Home Service. Frederick remained with Bedfordshires being renumbered as 240133 (in whole Territorial force renumbering) but was transferred on 19 Aug 17 to 2nd/2nd (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers) London Regiment as Private 245179 in 1917. This Battalion was by that time 


part of 173 Brigade, 58th (2nd/1st London) Division of the Territorial Force and was to take part in 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) at the Battles of Menin Road (24-25 Sep), Polygon Wood (26-27 Sep) and 2nd Passchendaele (26 Oct -10 Nov 1917). Frederick was killed in action on 26 Oct 1917. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £14 and arrears of £7 19s 1 d was paid to his father.
