Pre War
Arnold Walter JELLIS, was born in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, on
7th November 1896, son of Walter Jellis a Council Labourer and Alice
Annie Jellis (nee Messider). The eldest of their four children although one
died in infancy. His parents married on 28th October 1895, in
Aldbury, Herts.
1901 Census records Arnold aged 4, living with his parents,
and brother Reginald aged 2, in Fernley Cottage, Hagden Lane, Watford, Herts.
The family had a Boarder Frederick Carter, a General labourer.
1911 census, Arnold aged 14 had left school and was working
as a House Boy on a Farm, living with his parents, brother Reginald (12), and
sister Ivy (8), at Down Farm, Aldbury, Herts. His father is recorded as a Farm
Horseman. They had a Boarder Arthur Taylor also a Horseman.
Wartime Service
Arnold enlisted at Watford, Herts, posted to the Royal Field
Artillery and issued with the service No. 83032. On completion of his training,
he was sent to France arriving on 27th July 1915.
In March 1917, he is recorded as received a Gun Shot Wound
(GSW) to his leg and admitted to hospital at Etaples.
Arnold was Killed in Action on 30th August 1917, aged 21, at the time of his death, he was Acting Bombardier, with “C” Battery, 72nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Koksijde, Belgium
Additional Information
His mother was awarded a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week
from 19th March 1918, and his effects of £10-17s-02d, pay owing and
his war gratuity of £12, his effects went to his mother by request from his
father.
