Pre War
John Clarke was born on 28 Mar 1891 in Somers Toen, London to William henry Jennett, a metal polisher, and Ellen Emma (nee Graham). The family were living at 7 Clarendon Square, Somers Town, St Pancras, London. John had an older brother, William Henry Robert, and two older sisters, Ellen and Mary.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 25 Clinton Road, Tottenham. By 1911 John’s parents had moved to Verulam Terrace, Bells hill, Barnet.
Wartime Service
John enlisted with the Bedfordshire Regiment and was posted for training to 4th Battalion as Private 6487. At some time he served with the 1st Battalion in in France (probably as reinforcement, a large draft of 190 other Ranks joined on 2 Dec 1914 at Ypres) and also with 2nd Battalion.
John may have been with 2nd Battalion at Festubert as there were a number of wounded on 30 Jun 1915. John Died of wounds at Etaples on 9 July 1915. As no service record was found for John the previous could not be confirmed.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £12 13s 7d was paid to his mother. Older brother William Henry Robert Jennett had served with Gloucestershire Regiment from 1901 to 1910 and also with Middlesex Regt in France during WW1 and survived.
